Mission
Shakira's humanitarian and advocacy work is focused on universal education and early childhood development, particularly the health, nutrition and stimulation of children who are not yet in school. Shakira has a three-part strategy which includes foundations dedicated to development advocacy in Colombia, Latin America and the World. In October 2011, President Obama appointed Shakira to the President¹s Advisory Commission on Educational Excellence for Hispanics, a commission dedicated to advising Obama and Secretary Arne Duncan on issues of educational success related to Hispanic students.
PIES DESCALZOS
The Pies Descalzos Foundation was founded in Barranquilla, Colombia, during the late '90s when Shakira, only 18 years old at the time, decided to take up the social duty of collaborating on efforts to improve the education, nutrition and health of the most vulnerable: the children. The organization consists of support programs for children and their families and offers real solutions to increase quality of life and give these kids and their families the opportunity to exercise their right to an education, which will later determine their growth and development in society.
The Barefoot Foundation is a U.S. non-profit, non-governmental organization created by Shakira. Education is the key to a better world for everyone, not just underprivileged children, and includes not just books and facts; it is also social and emotional growth. We help children exercise their basic right to an education, paving the way for their growth in society.
ALAS Foundation is a non-profit organization created by the most prominent Latin American artists, business leaders and intellectuals to mobilize Latin-American society towards the implementation of integrated early childhood public policies. 9 million Latin American children younger than 5 years old suffer from chronic malnutrition and 22 million don't have access to education. Malnutrition and the absence of care in the early stages of life are the main mechanisms for the transmission of inequality. This is why experts agree that early childhood development is one of the most effective tools to end with the intergenerational cycle of poverty.
As one of Unicef's Goodwill Ambassadors Shakira has advocated for the importance of establishing political initiatives that put an end to the higher number of children without access to education. According to the international institution, UNICEF, over 120 million children around the world are without any formal education or schooling.

MISIÓN
La misión filantrópica de Shakira se centra en la educación universal y el desarrollo infantil temprano, con especial atención a la salud, nutrición y la estimulación de los niños que aun no van al colegio. Shakira tiene una estrategia basada en tres partes que incluye fundaciones cuyo trabajo se desarrolla en Colombia, América Latina y el Mundo. En Octubre de 2011, el presidente Obama nombró Shakira como miembro de la Comisión Educativa Presidencial para la Excelencia Educativa de los Hispanos, en el que Shakira aconsejará Obama y el secretario Arne Duncan en los temas de educación y los estudiantes hispanos.
FUNDACIÓN PIES DESCALZOS
La Fundación Pies Descalzos fue fundada en Barranquilla, Colombia a finales de los años 90. Shakira, con tan solo 18 años, decidió centrar sus esfuerzos en mejorar la educación, nutrición y salud de la niñez más vulnerable. La Fundación ofrece programas de apoyo a los niños y sus famílias ofreciendo soluciones reales que no solamente mejoran la calidad de sus vidas sino que también les garantiza su derecho a una educación de calidad, que va a determinar su crecimiento y su éxito en la sociedad.
La Fundación Barefoot es una organización no guvernamental basada en los Estados Unidos y creada por Shakira. Barefoot utiliza el exitoso modelo creado por la Fundación Pies Descalzos para asegurar que todos los niños tengan el derecho a una educación y nutrición de calidad, fomentando así una major calidad de vida
América Latina en Acción Solidaria (ALAS) es una organización sin ánimo de lucro fundada el 12 de diciembre de 2006 en Ciudad de Panamá creada para movilizar a la sociedad latinoamericana en favor de la implementación de políticas públicas integrales de desarrollo infantil temprano para que todos sus niños entre 0 y 6 años tengan acceso a planes de salud, educación y nutrición.
Shakira, como Embajadora de Buena Voluntad de Unicef, ha defendido la importancia de establecer políticas activas que terminen con los altos números de niños sin acceso a educación. Según esta institución internacional, más de 120 millones de niños y niñas alrededor del mundo siguen sin escolarizar.
